History

The school was established as a merger of Madison-Mayodan and Stoneville high schools. Athletic programs of the two former schools (formerly the Falcons and Eagles, respectively) were merged in 1989, and the new facilities were opened in 1991.

McMichael High School is the home of the 2004 and 2007 NCHSAA 2A Dual Team State Championship Wrestling teams. The head coach for the Fighting Phoenix wrestling program is Jon Bullins.

The school is named after Dalton L. McMichael (1914-2001), a textile executive in North Carolina.
